ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Preparation of the Elementary and Secondary Beyond Numbers Teacher Manuals has been a group effort. It could not have been accomplished without hard work, cooperation and collaboration between institutions and institution departments.

The guides are directly related to the Beyond Numbers mathematics exhibit, which is a product of a creative collaboration between exhibit developers and educators at the Maryland Science Center and the mathematics faculty at The George Washington University. Funding for this project has been provided by the National Science Foundation, International Business Machines Corporation, and the Maryland Science Center.

The principal writing and illustration was done by Cathlene Brady, Math Specialist at the Maryland Science Center. Eliene Augenbraun created the representations of museum components at the beginning of each lesson. Lilly Fujinaga, David Serota, and Network Publications were the manual designers.

Tireless and patient editing and content revision were provided by members of the Mathematics Department faculty at The George Washington University: Frank Baginski, Joe Bonin, E. Arthur Robinson, and Rodica Simion.

Eliene Augenbraun, Eve Gurian Wachhaus, Bill Haas, D.D. Hilke, Mary Olenick, Stephanie Ratcliff, Shannon Voirol, and Pete Yancone were members of the Maryland Science Center math exhibit team who made editorial contributions. Elizabeth Hurley also edited.

Some of the busiest people in the world, school teachers, found time to edit the material. We are most grateful to Linda Clark, Gretchen Ginder, Jim Leahy, Scott McComb, Ken Schwartz, Margaret Swyka and Nancy Thayer for the suggestions that helped create a manual suited to its intended audience.

There is no substitute for classroom experience. We thank the teachers who were willing to let real classes try the lessons - Beth Brown, Daria Capps, Linda Clark, Gretchen Ginder, Linda Hultgren, Jim Leahy, Despina Lekakis, Melissa Malesh, Bettie Maresca, Gwen Martin, Scott McComb, Mary Jo Messenger, Ruth Miller, Jean Ragin, and Ken Schwartz.

Others who personally offered valuable information, suggestions or editorial comments were Barbara Deuink, Cynthia C. Dwyer, Nat Freidman, Terence H. Nixon, John Rigby, Joe Rosenstein, Alan Schoen, Larry Shirley, Marion Walter, and Claudia Zaslavsky.

The manuals have been enriched with materials reprinted from the periodicals In Discrete Mathematics (in the Secondary Manual) and Student Notes of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics newsletter (in the Elementary Manual). The careers resources pamphlet of the Conference Board of Mathematical Science saved us from trying to reinvent the wheel. Materials were also donated by NES Arnold and Mimosa Publications.
