MAPPING-ON-THE-BUS LESSON


 
 
 At the Beyond Numbers exhibit, visitors are invited to figure the best way to circumnavigate the globe by way of cities shown on a large globe that lights the path and calculates trip distance as they go.
 
 

NCTM Standards and AAAS Benchmarks addressed:

 Mathematics as Problem Solving:
Students can acquire confidence in using mathematics meaningfully.

 Mathematics as Communication:
Students can use the skills of reading, listening and viewing to interpret and evaluate mathematical ideas.

MATERIALS

Clipboards
Colored pencils with erasers
Commercial street and highway maps. (Your state department of transportation might provide these free of charge.) Telephone books might also contain road maps for your area.
 
 

PROCEDURE

Four students in the front seats are given street maps. They are to mark on the maps the route taken on their way to the Beyond Numbers exhibit. Have the students consider alternate routes. Have them try to figure out why the driver chose the route taken.
