While each institution participating in the development of the exhibition
contributes its own unique expertise and perspectives, the exhibition team
finds clear unity in a common vision of what the Beyond Numbers exhibition
should be.
The exhibition will offer personally challenging and positive experiences
with mathematics.
The exhibition will offer experiences that emphasize the creative aspects
of mathematics.
The exhibition will offer connections between mathematics and the real
world.
The exhibition will include topics that, in aggregate, reflect diversity
in modern mathematics' approaches and applications.
The exhibition will provide topics, design media, and interactive opportunities
that stimulate interest and promote successful engagement by our diverse
audiences.
The activities in this manual have been written with the following goals
in mind:
Students will recognize at least a few objects or activities featured in
the exhibit.
The teacher will have some background knowledge about at least one object
or activity in the exhibit.
Students and their teachers will see unfamiliar objects or activities in
the exhibit that will expand their definition of mathematics.
In the months following their visit, students and their teachers will refer
back to an exhibit object or activity.
