In the late 1950's, Bob and his family came to Saratoga Springs at the invitation of a dedicated group of Saratogians, intent on reviving the long dormant YMCA for their city. He came and recruited volunteers of all ages, turning them into leaders for the YMCA and the community, establishing a tradition that continues today.
He fostered a young adult group for friendship and community leadership development - he convinced me to tackle one side of a debate at a national Y young adult assembly at Association island one summer - scared witless, literally shaking in my shoes, I made points and did the job i ws sure I could not. It happened with me again and over and over with so many other Y folks through the years.
He established youth programs - Gra-Y, Hi-Y, Leaders club - whose graduates became community leaders, to the ongoing benefit of Saratoga Springs even today.
The Y women, organized to aid youth programs, bought a building and ran a barn sale operation raising thousands of dollars. Some of the 'old ladies' - myself included - continue today to proud of our success.
Bob was a teacher, a leader, dedicated to the community he served - most of all he was and is a very dear friend. Bask in the glow, Bob!
